Shot List Template for Photographers: How to Plan Every Shoot

A shot list is your coverage guarantee. It ensures you don't leave a shoot having missed an important image, and it gives your client confidence that the important moments are planned — not left to chance. This page explains why shot lists matter, how to build one, and how to use them effectively with clients.

Why Shot Lists Matter

Shot lists aren't a sign of being unprepared — they're the opposite. The best commercial photographers on set use shot lists. The best wedding photographers carry a list of the must-have group combinations. It's professional planning, not lack of spontaneity.

Shot lists serve two functions:

  1. Coverage insurance — you have a checklist that ensures you don't miss critical shots in the flow of a busy shoot
  2. Client alignment — sharing the shot list with your client creates a shared understanding of what's planned and gives them the opportunity to add anything important before shoot day

The Shot List Template

Structure: Must-Haves First, Nice-to-Haves Second

Always separate your shot list into two tiers. Must-haves are non-negotiable — if you don't capture these, the shoot hasn't delivered. Nice-to-haves are the "if we have time and the opportunity presents itself" shots.

How to Share the Shot List

Include the shot list in your client briefing, sent 3–7 days before the shoot. This gives clients time to review it and add anything important. Lumeny's briefing feature includes a shot list section — you can build the list once and share it as part of the full briefing link.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I share the full shot list with clients or just the highlights? Share the full list. Clients appreciate seeing that the shoot is planned in detail, and it gives them the opportunity to flag missing shots before the day — not during or after.

How many shots should be on the must-have list? 10–15 is the right range for most shoots. Fewer than 10 and you risk missing important coverage. More than 15 must-haves creates time pressure that affects everything else.

What if we don't get through the whole shot list? That's why you separate must-haves from nice-to-haves. Must-haves should always be achievable within your planned shooting time. Nice-to-haves are exactly that.

Do I need a different shot list for every client? Create a master shot list template per shoot type (wedding, portrait, commercial), then customize it per client by adding specific moments and removing shots that don't apply. See also: photography briefing template.
